PRISON ISLAND

THE HISTORY OF THE ISLAND

Changuu in swahili. Located about 6km noth west of Stone Town, around the 1860s the island was used as prison for rebellious slaves and also as coral mine. Later was used as quarantine station for yellow fever cases. Nowadays the island houses a collection of endangered Aldabra giant tortoises, a gift from the British governor of the Seychelles. The old prison still remains and gives shelter to some of the tortoises, some of the cells can also be visited.
